CAMP Chicago New Year Kick-Off Dinner
CAMP-Chicago is kicking off the 2014 new year with the 5th Annual Kick-Off Dinner on Friday, January 31st. Meet the CAMP-Chicago officers, learn about upcoming events and network with other Muslim professionals. This year's dinner will be held at the Hilton in downtown Chicago.
We welcome guest speaker, Haroon Moghul, Fellow in Muslim Politics and Societies at the Center on National Security at Fordham Law School. He writes a weekly column for Al Arabiya English and is a doctoral candidate at Columbia University, focusing on Islamic thought in India. Previously he was a National Security Studies Fellow at the New America Foundation. He holds an M.A. from Columbia University in Middle East and South Asia Studies
Haroon's 2006 novel, The Order of Light (Penguin) anticipated the Arab Spring; a young Egyptian immolates himself and sparks a Middle Eastern revolution. Haroon has been published in Boston Review, Salon, Foreign Policy, Al-Jazeera and Salon. His media appearances include BBC, CNN, The History Channel and Russia Today. In 2015, Yale University Press will publish Haroon's journey from Islam to atheism to Islam, How To Be Muslim.
Haroon has served as an expert guide to Andalucía, Istanbul and Bosnia, sits on the Multicultural Audience Initiative at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (Islamic Galleries) and is a Senior Correspondent for Religion Dispatches. He speaks internationally on Muslim cultures, identity, and arts and literature. He is a Senior Editor and video blogger for Islamic Monthly, lives in New York City, and is allergic to almost everything.
