Salim's full bio:
Salim Patel began his second term on the Board of Education of Passaic, NJ in 2012. After winning his reelection, and receiving a nomination from the sole Orthodox Jewish board trustee, Salim entered this year as the first Muslim board of education president in the State of New Jersey.
The Passaic Board of Education oversees a budget of $360 million and the 9th largest school district in the state. Salim has been involved with the implementation of a district wide school uniform policy to combat bullying, peer pressure and gang activity. He also spearheaded investments in technology at the urban school district, which will be deploying laptops to all 7th and 8th grades in the upcoming school year.
He is a 2010-11 Fellow of University of Southern California’s Center for Religion & Civic Culture’s American Muslim Civic Leadership Institute and is the founder of SMILE, a non-profit focused on social services including food pantries, health clinics and senior care.  He also sits on the Board of Directors for the Rutgers University Alumni Association and is the Vice Chair of the Rutgers University Muslim Alumni Association, which recently established an endowed scholarship at Rutgers University.
Professionally, Salim works in corporate finance, which helps to keep him up to date on business perspectives that help with numerous initiatives for the students in his district.
