EVENT: Civic & Political Engagement Through a Muslim-American Lens

Come join for our conversation about civic engagement and network with local professionals as well. A quote from our speaker regarding the power hour he spoke at in NJ, "My basic point was that civic engagement and even politics is really not what you see on TV, but it's every act of how you deal with the community around you. So from that, it can encompass many possible issues."

Assad R. Akhter was named Deputy Chief of Staff for Congressman Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) in February 2011. In this new capacity he is directly responsible for managing the local district offices and staff for the 8th Congressional District of New Jersey.

Prior to this most recent assignment Assad served since 2006 as the Legislative Director in the Washington, DC office where he oversaw the Congressman's legislative agenda and staff. He was tasked with coordinating the Congressman's position on the House Ways & Means Committee as well as staffing his assignment on the House Homeland Security Committee. Assad started as staffer on Capitol Hill in 2003 and previously worked for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) where he helped create the Congressional Pakistan Caucus and was the lead staffer for the House Science Committee.

Assad has also spent a substantive amount of time working on political campaigns throughout America. He provided material assistance to and campaigned with both Reps. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Andre Carson (D-IN) in their home districts as they became the first and second Muslim Members of Congress in 2006 and 2008, respectively. In 2005, Assad worked directly with the NJ AFL-CIO to help organize and mobilize over one million labor workers; his efforts led to the election of Jon Corzine (D-NJ) as Governor in New Jersey and an increase in the majority for Democrats in the State Legislature. Apart from his official legislative duties, Assad is a co-founder and past President of the Congressional Muslim Staff Association (CMSA).
